Petr Kvíčala occupies a singular position within the contemporary art scene. Over more than four decades, he has developed a visual language unmistakably his own — one in which freedom and precision coexist, sustained by a profound understanding of form, colour and space.

Kvíčala understands painting as a field of possibilities in constant transformation. His paintings possess a powerful physical presence, activating their surroundings and altering our perception of the spaces we inhabit.

Repetition becomes method, discipline and mantra: returning to particular gestures and structures generates fresh decisions and discoveries. Lines, circles, curves and squares extend across the surface, repeated and disrupted until apparently simple geometric forms acquire rhythm, tension and unexpected complexity. In this process, ornament is not understood as mere decoration, but as a generative principle: a visual language charged with meaning, through which order opens into transformation.

Consistency is one of the essential aspects of Kvíčala’s contribution. In the face of acceleration and the relentless pursuit of novelty, Kvíčala has demonstrated how sustained artistic inquiry can remain open, active and relevant. His practice and contribution to contemporary art evolve continuously without losing its freedom or identity.

The title ‘Prelude’ evokes the anticipation of something about to unfold, a point of departure. 

In this exhibition, Barcelona becomes the setting for his next chapter, from which the vitality of Kvíčala’s painting enters a broader dialogue. Like the opening movement of a composition, ‘Prelude’ initiates a conversation between artist, artwork and viewer, charged with encounters, interpretations and possibilities.

‘Prelude’ brings together a unique selection of works from Kvíčala’s practice, allowing their affinities and departures to emerge, while revealing recurring structures reimagined through changes in scale, density, colour and intensity. Their compositions produce sensations of vibration and movement, inviting the viewer’s eye — and ultimately the body — to move with them. This rhythmic energy conveys a sense of joyfulness and vitality, while the meditative quality of repetition introduces a subtle spiritual dimension.

The historic architecture of Palau Martorell provides an exceptional setting for this encounter, offering a compelling counterpoint to the immediacy of Kvíčala’s paintings and allowing their scale, chromatic intensity and internal movement to resonate across the rooms. The works modify their rhythms and proportions, creating a dynamic relationship between painting, architecture and viewer. Here, ‘Prelude’ displays Kvíčala’s ability to transform not only the painted surface, but the environments they inhabit.
